Why reprogram your automatic gearbox?
There are three main reasons why customers come to Réunion to have their automatic gearbox remapped:
1. To follow on from a Stage 1, 2 or 3 engine remap
This is by far the most common reason. When you remap your engine (for example, a Golf R from 320 ch to 380 ch), your gearbox’s torque capacity increases by 20 to 40 per cent. The original mapping isn’t optimised for this new torque level, which can lead to wheel spin, premature clutch wear, or even the gearbox entering a degraded mode. Reprogramming the gearbox at the same time allows it to handle this increase in torque without any issues.
2. To make the gearbox more responsive during sporty driving
On models such as the Mégane RS, the Audi RS3, the Cupra Formentor or the BMW M2, the original automatic gearbox is deliberately restricted by the manufacturer to prioritise comfort. Remapping unlocks the true responsiveness: gear changes in a matter of milliseconds, instant kickdown, and paddle-shift downshifts with no lag.
3. To correct unsatisfactory factory-set behaviour
Certain gearboxes (notably Stellantis’ EAT8, Ford’s PowerShift or dry 7-speed DSGs in urban traffic) exhibit sluggish gear changes, hesitation or a lack of smoothness as standard. Reprogramming smooths out these flaws without compromising reliability.
What reprogramming does NOT do: it does not fix a mechanically faulty gearbox. If your automatic gearbox has proven slippage, leaks or abnormal noises, start with a diagnostic check and a MotulEvo oil change before considering reprogramming.

This is the most popular configuration at Shiftech Réunion: simultaneously remapping the engine and the automatic gearbox. Here’s why this combination is so effective:
- The remapped engine delivers higher torque than the original gearbox can utilise to its full potential
- The remapped gearbox shifts faster and handles the additional torque more effectively
- The two mapping profiles are synchronised to ensure consistent performance

From €499 including VAT, oil, all filters and various new parts. The final price depends on your vehicle’s model, the type of gearbox (DSG, S tronic, PDK, EAT, e-CVT, etc.) and the amount of oil required. A personalised quote is provided free of charge before any work is carried out.
Yes. Automatic gearbox remapping is not limited to tuned vehicles. On a standard vehicle, it enables faster gear changes, better-timed shifts within the rev range, and more responsive gear changes. This is a separate modification in its own right, distinct from engine tuning.
The vast majority of dual-clutch gearboxes (DSG, S tronic, PDK, DKG, EDC) and torque converter gearboxes (EAT, ZF 8HP, Tiptronic) are compatible. CVTs are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the centre with your vehicle’s details (make, model, version) to confirm compatibility.
When carried out correctly, automatic gearbox remapping does not compromise the transmission. By calibrating the safety mechanisms and clutch pressure in line with the engine’s actual torque, it actually reduces the risk of slippage and overheating, which damageunmodified gearboxes.
Yes, this is in fact the recommended procedure. Both remappings are carried out during the same appointment, with validation on a dynamometer. The consistency between the engine mapping and the gearbox mapping is checked before the vehicle is returned.
