RestorFX: what is it?
RestorFX is a car varnish restoration technology developed in Canada in the early 2000s. It does not mask defects: it works in depth on the existing varnish when it is still recoverable.
Unlike polishing or buffing, the aim is not a temporary visual effect, but a lasting improvement in surface condition, gloss and depth of colour.
RestorFX is clearly positioned between detailing and bodywork: more effective and long-lasting than a simple cosmetic treatment, but much less invasive than a new paint job.

How does RestorFX work?
RestorFX is based on a chemical-mechanical approach. In other words, the treatment aims to restore the surface structure of the varnish, which has been altered by time, UV rays, washing and pollution.
In practical terms, the protocol combines :
- controlled chemical action to soften and reactivate the varnish,
- gradual mechanical action to smooth the surface and reduce roughness.
The result: a varnish that is more homogeneous, visually denser and significantly shinier, without the addition of paint or artificial cosmetic effects.

How RestorFX works at Shiftech
1Diagnosis
2Preparation and polishing
3RestorFX treatment
4Quality control
Each intervention follows a strict process, comparable to a technical operation.
Diagnosis
Analysis of the state of the varnish, its integrity and its potential for restoration. This stage determines whether RestorFX is relevant and how far the result can go.
Preparation and Polishing
Thorough washing and decontamination if necessary, to work on a perfectly sound surface. The bodywork components are then sanded to open up the scratches and work in the best possible way.
RestorFX treatment
Application of the RestorFX protocol to restore the varnish, reduce visual defects and restore shine and depth.
Quality control
Checking the consistency of the finish and overall coherence with the initial diagnosis.
RestorFX or bodywork: how do you choose?
The difference lies in the nature of the work.
- Bodywork: sanding, new paintwork, long downtime.
- RestorFX: restoration of the existing varnish, without repainting.
RestorFX is appropriate when the paintwork is intact but visually degraded. Bodywork is still essential if the varnish has broken through or the paintwork is missing.
At Shiftech, this choice is always guided by the diagnosis, not by the sale of a service.
Case studies: RestorFX or bodywork?
| Situation observed on the vehicle | actual state of the paintwork | Recommended solution | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro-scratches visible in sunlight, dull paintwork | Varnish present but tired | RestorFX | The varnish is recoverable, restoration possible without repainting |
| Light to moderate oxidation on bonnet or roof | Varnish oxidised but intact | RestorFX | Restores colour and shine without major intervention |
| Superficial scratches caused by washing | Varnish not penetrated | RestorFX | Lasting correction of visual defects |
| Old paintwork, lack of depth throughout the vehicle | Varnish still present | RestorFX | Rational alternative to full paintwork |
| Deep scratches visible with a fingernail | Varnish penetrated locally | Bodywork | Paint restoration no longer possible |
| Chipped or blistered paintwork | Missing paintwork | Bodywork | Repainting essential |
| Metal or primer visible after impact | Damaged surface | Bodywork | Structural work required |
| Deformed wing or bumper | Bodywork defect | Bodywork | RestorFX does not affect the shape of components |
How much does a Shiftech RestorFX cost?
Shiftech's RestorFX service starts at €599 inc VAT. The exact price then depends on the condition of the varnish, the size of the vehicle, the level of correction required and the time needed.
In general, RestorFX is much more economical than bodywork, while offering excellent value for money.
