What is a power bench?

A power bench, also known as a dyno, chassis dynamometer or test bench, is a mechanical and electronic device used to measure the power and torque developed by an engine. At Shiftech, our dynos can be used to test different types of vehicle, including cars, motorbikes and quad bikes.

This equipment is used by the engine engineers and technicians at our centres to analyse and optimise vehicle performance, as part of our commitment.

How does a power bench work?

The operating principle of a power bench is based on the use of rollers connected to electronic sensors. The vehicle is placed on these rollers, which are driven by the drive wheels.

The sensors measure the rotational force and speed of the rollers, enabling the engine's power and torque to be calculated.

Measuring power and torque: why is it important?

Measuring an engine's power and torque is essential for assessing the effectiveness of engine reprogramming. These two criteria are directly linked to vehicle performance:

  • Power: this corresponds to the engine's ability to supply mechanical energy as a function of time. The higher the power, the faster the vehicle will be able to accelerate and reach high speeds.
  • Torque: this represents the rotational force exerted by the engine on the transmission shaft. High torque improves the vehicle's ability to climb hills or tow heavy loads.

By using a power bench, you can detect any mechanical problems, such as loss of compression or poor combustion, by recording and analysing the logs.

An oversized wind tunnel

Although the power dyno is essential for measuring your vehicle's performance, it is not the only requirement for successful reprogramming.

In addition to the chassis dynamometer, it is crucial to integrate the wind tunnel into the heart of the reprogramming process.

At Shiftech, we understand the importance of a wind tunnel in the reprogramming process and have equipped our centres with the most powerful wind tunnels on the market, with air extraction capacities of over 60,000 m3/hr.

So we don't just use top-of-the-range power dynos; we also incorporate wind tunnel technology to ensure that your vehicle is tested and optimised in conditions as close to the real thing as possible.

The Rotronics Autoscan X4: Shiftech's power bench of choice

The Autoscan X4 power dyno, designed by the French brand Rotronics, is fitted in all our Shiftech centres. This belt-synchronised 4-wheel drive dyno is capable of measuring up to 1,200 hp, offering precise and reliable measurement of vehicle performance.

Thanks to its design, the Autoscan X4 can be used to test cars, motorbikes, quad bikes, buggies and commercial vehicles, opening up reprogramming to everyone.

DEVELLOPEMENT

The importance of the log and the engine engineer

To ensure effective and lasting engine reprogramming, it is also crucial to work closely with our engine engineers.

They have the knowledge and expertise to analyse the data collected by the power bench and make the appropriate adjustments.

What's more, thanks to the use of a log (data recorder), the engine engineer will be able to monitor the evolution of the vehicle's performance and quickly detect any anomalies, so that they can be corrected before the vehicle is returned to the customer.
