Locked engine control unit: Shiftech responds with unlock
Tuning an engine is not as simple as it used to be. Manufacturers now lock access to the ECUs, making it impossible to carry out any work without first doing so. At Shiftech, we know the terrain inside out: we explain why these locks exist, which vehicles are affected, and how unlocking allows you to regain control of engine performance.
Why can't some engine ECUs be reprogrammed directly?
For several years now, carmakers and ECU manufacturers have been playing a cat-and-mouse game with reprogramming professionals. In concrete terms, they are putting in place software and hardware protection to block access to the read/write protocols of the ECU (Engine Control Unit). As a result, certain generations of ECUs are temporarily inaccessible to reprogramming, until new solutions are developed.
How do manufacturers manage to block reprogramming?
Using reverse engineering, manufacturers analyse our reprogramming tools (such as bench, boot or OBD boxes) to identify the vulnerabilities used. As soon as a method is known, they publish software updates (firmware) that fill in the gaps. This is why many ECUs manufactured after a certain date are deliberately locked.
Is it possible to bypass these protections?
Yes, but this requires an additional step called 'unlock'. This involves physically sending the ECU to a specialist service provider capable of unlocking the secure access, so that we can then carry out the engine reprogramming according to the rules of the trade.
Which ECUs need to be unlocked first?
At present, the following vehicles must undergo an unlock procedure:
| Make / Model | ECU concerned | Date of manufacture | Price list |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW / Mini / Rolls Royce | Engine ECU | After June 2020 | 450 € |
| Toyota Supra | Engine ECU | After June 2020 | 450 € |
| Mercedes-Benz | Engine ECU | After 2021 | 450 € |
| Ford 2.0 EcoBlue | SID212 | All years | 450 € |
| Mercedes 1.3 Turbo Petrol | Engine ECU | After 2018 | 450 € |
This list is subject to change. Contact your nearest Shiftech branch directly for compatibility and lead times.
How long does it take to unlock an ECU?
This type of ECU cannot be unlocked directly on site. It must be removed from the vehicle and then sent to a specialist service provider capable of carrying out the operation safely. This procedure involves immobilising the vehicle for around a week, including transport to and from the site and treatment. Our teams take care of all the logistics, from removing the ECU to putting it back, keeping you informed every step of the way.
How much does it cost to unlock a calculator?
The cost of an unlock varies according to the engine, the complexity of the ECU and the service provider carrying out the operation. In general, there is an additional cost, independent of the reprogramming. For a precise quote, we recommend that you contact your Shiftech centre.
How long do I have to wait if an ECU cannot be reprogrammed?
Protocols can always be circumvented in the end... but it can take time. Some ECUs were blocked for several years before a reliable solution was found. If your vehicle is affected, the best strategy is to be patient or to anticipate the unlock now.
So now you know why some ECUs - and maybe yours - are blocked. But rest assured: thanks to Shiftech's expertise and the unlock procedure, it is possible to regain control. Our teams closely follow each manufacturer's development to offer you reliable, safe and high-performance solutions. Contact your Shiftech centre to find out if your vehicle is affected, and take full advantage of its potential.
