Why should you change the fluid in your BMW’s automatic gearbox?

Contrary to what many BMW dealerships still claim, the BMW automatic gearbox is not “lubricated for life”. This is one of the most persistent and costly myths for owners of the 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5 or BMW M models.

BMW has long promoted ZF gearboxes as being “lifetime-lubricated”, but the manufacturer itself has gradually revised its stance: recent service booklets specify intervals for changing the transmission fluid, generally around 60,000 km to 100,000 km depending on the model, and much sooner under severe conditions.

The symptoms of a worn-out BMW automatic gearbox are recognisable:

  • Noticeable jerks at low speeds, particularly on models with the ZF 8HP
  • Hesitation when downshifting in Sport mode
  • A sharp jolt felt when engaging reverse gear
  • Loss of responsiveness in the steering wheel paddles on the M2, M3 and M4 DKG
  • A ‘Transmission error’ message or reduced performance mode activating spontaneously
  • On BMW M5 F10 models: vibrations when exiting bends at high revs
  • On X5 / X7 models when towing: sluggish performance on uphill gradients

The cost of replacing or overhauling a BMW automatic gearbox is particularly high: expect to pay between €5,000 and €12,000 depending on the model, and even more for the M5, M8, Alpina or X7 M50i. The ZF 8HP in particular is a complex gearbox, whose integrated mechatronics make any repair work costly.

Compare this to the €499 for a preventive MotulEvo oil change at Shiftech. The cost-benefit ratio between prevention and repair is particularly favourable on BMWs.

The automatic gearboxes fitted to BMWs

The BMW range mainly uses two families of modern automatic gearboxes, alongside a few rarer gearboxes found on older or special-edition models.

ZF 8HP: torque converter transmission (the most common)

This has been the most widely used transmission in BMWs since 2009. Designed by ZF Friedrichshafen, it is fitted to virtually all 1 Series to 8 Series models, X1 to X7 models, as well as the BMW M3, M4, M5 and M8 of the G80 generation and later. Its main variants:

  • 8HP45: fitted to mid-range vehicles
  • 8HP70: on high-performance vehicles (5 Series, 7 Series, X5, X6)
  • 8HP75 and 8HP90: fitted to recent BMW M models and Alpina models, with a torque capacity of up to 900 Nm

The ZF 8HP is renowned for its versatility, quick gear changes and excellent efficiency, but it requires rigorous preventive maintenance using ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid, which loses its properties after 80,000 km.

DKG: dual-clutch gearbox (BMW M F-series)

The DKG (Doppelkupplungsgetriebe), manufactured by Getrag, is the dual-clutch gearbox specifically developed for F-generation BMW M sports cars. It is fitted to:

  • M2 (F87)
  • M3 (F80)
  • M4 (F82, F83)
  • M5 (F10)
  • M6 (F06, F12, F13)
  • 1M Coupé

 

On the latest BMW M models (G80 M3, G82 M4, G87 M2, G90 M5), BMW has moved away from the DKG in favour of the ZF 8HP, which is considered more versatile and compatible with hybridisation.   • Service duration: 1h30 to 2h
  • By appointment only: Tuesday to Saturday, 9.00 am–12.30 pm / 2.00 pm–6.00 pm

On average, 60,000 to 80,000 km for the ZF 8HP oil-bath gearbox in mixed use. 40,000 to 50,000 km under severe conditions (urban driving, towing, sporty driving). 20,000 to 25,000 km recommended for BMW M models used on circuits or at track days.

The entire range of modern BMW models with automatic transmission: 1 Series to 8 Series, X1 to X7 and XM, Z4, M2 to M8, as well as the Alpina B3 to XB7 and XD3/XD4. The 100% electric BMW models (i3, i4, i5, i7, iX, iX3) are fitted with a single-speed transmission and are not affected.
