Why should you service the automatic gearbox on your Renault?
There is a persistent misconception amongst many motorists: that the EDC gearbox is ‘maintenance-free’. This is not true, and it is a belief that could prove costly for owners of Clio, Mégane, Captur or Austral models.
Renault recommends a regular change of transmission fluid, generally at around 60,000 km, and even sooner in cases of intensive use. A dual-clutch gearbox that has never had its fluid changed will gradually become contaminated with friction particles, which impairs gear changes and accelerates clutch wear.
Signs that an EDC gearbox is wearing out:
- Jerking at low speeds, particularly in first and second gears
- Delayed response when downshifting
- A sudden jolt when engaging reverse
- Switching to reduced-power mode for no apparent reason
- Engine warning light or gearbox fault message on the dashboard
- On the Mégane RS: unusually slow upshifts at high revs
- On the Alpine A110: loss of responsiveness in Sport or Track mode
Replacing a faulty EDC gearbox costs between €2,500 and €5,000 depending on the model, and even more on the Alpine A110 where parts are scarcer.
Compare this to the €499 cost of a preventive MotulEvo oil change at Shiftech. The cost-benefit ratio between prevention and repair is particularly favourable on Renault vehicles.

The EDC gearbox: Renault’s automatic transmission
The vast majority of Renault, Dacia and Alpine models with automatic gearboxes are fitted with the EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) gearbox, a dual-clutch transmission designed by Getrag (now Magna PT).
The EDC variants we deal with:
The 6-speed EDC is the most common version on the road, launched in 2010 based on a Getrag 6DCT250 gearbox. It is an oil-bath transmission and, in its most robust version, can handle up to 380 Nm; it is fitted to the majority of automatic Renaults on the road.
The 7-speed EDC is the sporty variant specific to the Alpine A110, derived from the Getrag 7DCT300. Designed to withstand extreme revs and track use, it is calibrated to respond instantly to the steering wheel paddles.
Recent models (Austral, Espace VI, Rafale) are fitted with an EDC transmission paired with either a 48V mild-hybrid or E-Tech full-hybrid powertrain, with a maintenance schedule tailored to the manufacturer’s specific fluid.

Exclusively Motul Getrag/Renault-approved fluids that comply with manufacturer standards. On the Alpine A110, a high-performance fluid compatible with circuit use is preferred.
Between 1? and 2 hours for a standard 6-speed EDC oil change. Allow around 2 hours for an Alpine A110 (7-speed gearbox with specific protocol).
Yes, at each of our Shiftech centres. You can book an appointment via our online form or by calling the centre of your choice directly.
If your EDC is showing signs of fatigue (à-knocks, slowness, hésitations), a MotulEvo oil change can often restore a significant part of the original behaviour by éliminating wear particles and completely restoring hydraulic pressures. Many of our Mégane RS and Alpine A110 customers have been surprised by the improved responsiveness they have regained
