Why does the DSG absolutely need an oil change?
Contrary to what many garages and even Volkswagen dealerships still claim, the DSG gearbox is not "lubricated for life". This is one of the most costly myths for owners of the Golf, Tiguan, Passat, Audi A3/A4/Q3/Q5, Skoda Octavia or Cupra Formentor.
Volkswagen officially recommends an oil change for the DSG:
- Every 60,000 km for oil-immersed DSGs (DQ250, DQ381, DQ500)
- Every 40,000 km under severe conditions: city driving, traffic jams, towing, sporty driving, etc
On dry DSG 7s (DQ200), which have attracted a lot of attention for their reliability, the mechatronic oil also needs to be carefully monitored.
The symptoms of a tired DSG generally appear between 80,000 and 120,000 km without maintenance:
- low-speed jerking, particularly in 1st and 2nd gear
- Hesitations on downshifts (D → 2 → 1)
- "Bell-like noise on DSG 7 when dry (DQ200)
- Downshift mode activated for no apparent reason
- Engine warning light or gearbox warning light comes on
- Shock felt when reverse gear is engaged
- DSG 'slips' on hill starts
The cost of a new or rebuilt DSG gearbox: between €3,500 and €7,000 depending on the model and variant, excluding labour.

The MotulEvo process applied to the DSG
1Cleaning and rinsing
2Draining and rinsing with Motul Transmission Clean additive
3Replacing filters and seals
4Dynamic fluid exchange via the MotulEvo station
5Final check and adaptation
Our DSG intervention follows a rigorous 5-step protocol, identical for all DQ250/DQ381/DQ500 variants (the DQ200 has a protocol adapted to its specific lubrication):
1. Cleaning and rinsing: The first step is to clean and rinse the gearbox to remove residues and impurities from the system. This prepares the transmission to receive the new oil.
2. Draining and rinsing with Motul Transmission Clean additive: Circulation of a detergent additive that loosens used oil deposits, friction particles and varnish in the crankcase, hydraulic lines and converter (on DQ250 in particular).
3. Replacement of filters and seals: Next, the filters and seals are replaced with new ones to ensure that the gearbox runs smoothly and that the new oil flows smoothly.
4. dynamic fluid exchange via the MotulEvo station: This is the stage that makes all the difference with a conventional manual oil change: the machine replaces 100% of the used oil with new Motul DSG/DCTF oil in a closed circuit, whereas a gravity oil change only replaces 60-65% of the fluid. The quantity injected is precisely that recommended by Volkswagen for your variant (5 to 8 litres, depending on the model).
5. Final check and adjustment: Reset the gearbox's adaptive values if necessary, check the exact level at operating temperature (the DSG level is very sensitive to temperature), road test or bench test depending on the centre.

DSG gearboxes serviced and flushed at Shiftech
The DSG has undergone several technical evolutions since its launch in 2003. At Shiftech, we work on all variants.
DSG 6 DQ250: VAG's historic DSG
The first DSG gearbox launched in 2003, the DQ250 is a 6-speed transmission in an oil bath that was widely used between 2003 and 2014.
It is notably found on the Golf V/VI GTI and R, Passat, Audi TT 8J/8S, Audi A3 8P, Audi S3 8P, Audi Q3 and Skoda Octavia RS.
DSG 7 DQ200: the dry version for small engines
Marketed from 2008, the DQ200 is a dry-running 7-speed DSG designed for smaller engines.
It is found in particular on the Golf VI/VII 1.2 and 1.4 TSI, 1.6 and 2.0 TDI, Polo GTI, Audi A1 and Audi A3 8V/8Y entry-level models .
DSG 7 DQ381: the modern hybrid-compatible evolution
Introduced in 2017, the DQ381 is gradually replacing the DQ250 on recent models.
In particular, it is fitted to the Golf VIII GTI/R, Tiguan, 2017+ Passat, Audi A3 8Y, Audi Q3 F3, Skoda Octavia IV, Skoda Kodiaq RS and Cupra Formentor.
DSG 7 DQ500: the reinforced DSG for high power ratings
Launched in 2009, this oil-immersed 7-speed gearbox has been designed for powerful engines and commercial vehicles.
In particular, it equips the Volkswagen Transporter T5/T6, Multivan, Caravelle, Amarok, Tiguan R, the latest Golf R as well as the Audi RS3, RS Q3, TT RS, SQ2 and Cupra Ateca.
