EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) is the dual-clutch transmission that Renault has adopted for its automatic transmission models since 2010. Designed by Getrag, it also equips Dacia and Alpine. It's a gearbox that's appreciated for its rapid gear changes and efficiency. But like all dual-clutch transmissions, it requires rigorous preventive maintenance to avoid premature wear of the discs and mechatronics.

Why does the EDC gearbox need an oil change?

Contrary to what many independent garages and even Renault dealerships still claim, the EDC gearbox is not "lubricated for life". This is a persistent myth that can cost owners of Clio, Mégane, Captur, Kadjar, Arkana, Austral, Duster or Alpine A110 dearly.

The official position of Renault and Getrag is clear: the oil-bath EDC gearbox must have its fluid changed at regular intervals, generally every 60,000 km, and from 40,000 km in severe conditions:

  • Predominantly urban driving
  • Regular sports driving
  • Driving with towing or heavy loads
  • Hot weather

The symptoms of a tired EDC are recognisable:

  • jolts at low speeds, particularly in 1st and 2nd gear
  • Hesitations on downshifts when manoeuvring
  • Downshift mode that activates spontaneously
  • Sharp jolt felt when engaging reverse gear
  • Engine light or gearbox light on
  • On Alpine A110: loss of responsiveness in Sport or Track mode
  • On Mégane RS: slow upshifts at high revs

The cost of a new or rebuilt EDC gearbox: between €2,500 and €5,000 depending on the model, and more on the Alpine A110 due to the scarcity of parts. this compares with €499 for a MotulEvo preventive oil change.

Our Renault EDC gearbox oil change service follows a rigorous 5-step protocol, adapted to the specific characteristics of the gearbox:

1. Preliminary electronic diagnosis Reading of the faults memorised on the EDC mechatronics via the Renault diagnostic tools, checking of the adaptive clutch values (crucial on a dual-clutch gearbox), checking of the operating temperature. If a serious fault is detected, we will inform you before carrying out the work.

2. Draining and rinsing with Motul Transmission Clean additive Circulation of a detergent additive that removes used oil deposits, friction particles from clutch discs and varnish from the sump and hydraulic lines. essential on EDCs with over 80,000 km, particularly on Renault models with high urban mileage.

3. Replacement of filters and seals: Next, the filters and seals are replaced with new parts to ensure that the gearbox runs smoothly and that the new oil flows smoothly.

4. dynamic fluid exchange via the MotulEvo station The machine replaces 100% of the used oil with new Motul EDC-specificoil in a closed circuit. A manual gravity drain replaces only 60-65% of the fluid. The quantity injected is precisely that recommended by Renault for your model (generally between 1.8 L and 2.5 L depending on the variant and year).

5. Final check and adaptation Reset the gearbox's adaptive values, check the exact level at operating temperature, road test or bench test depending on the centre. On the Alpine A110, a more thorough test is carried out to validate behaviour in Sport and Track modes.

Renault city and compact car range

In the city car segment, the EDC gearbox is fitted to the Clio (generations IV and V) in its TCe petrol and hybrid versions, as well as the sporty fourth-generation Clio RS (specific 220 bhp 6-speed EDC). Most petrol engines on the Captur I and II are also affected. In the compact segment, Mégane III (Phases 2 and 3) and Mégane IV have received EDC on their GT, GT Line and Mégane RS versions (including the fearsome RS Trophy 300 bhp). The Scénic III and IV, the Grand Scénic and the Kadjar complete this category.

Renault hatchback, SUV and new generation range

In the higher segments, EDC is fitted to the Talisman (hatchback and estate), theEspace V, the large SUV Koleos II, as well as recent generations: Arkana (2021+), Austral (2022+, mild-hybrid version), Espace VI (2023+, E-Tech full hybrid version) and the new Rafale SUV coupé.

Dacia range

At Dacia, EDC appeared later on the Duster (from 2018), fitted on the most powerful TCe versions of the SUV. The Sandero III and Logan III also benefit from this transmission on certain engines.

Alpine range

For Alpine, theA110 (the brand's only model) is offered exclusively with Getrag 7-speed EDC, in all its variants: A110 (base), A110 S, A110 GT and the track-oriented A110 R sports car. The transmission here is a central element of the car's identity, calibrated specifically to respond instantly to the paddles on the steering wheel.
