Why reprogram your automatic gearbox?
There are three main reasons why customers come to Strasbourg to have their automatic gearbox remapped:
1. To have a Stage 1, 2 or 3 engine remap carried out
This is by far the most common reason. When you remap your engine (for example, a BMW 340i from 374 ch to 440 ch or an Audi RS3 8Y from 400 ch to 460 ch), your gearbox’s torque capacity increases by 20 to 40 per cent. The original mapping is not optimised for this increased torque, which can lead to wheel spin, premature clutch wear, or even the transmission entering a limited-performance mode. Reprogramming the gearbox at the same time allows it to handle this increase in torque without any issues.
2. To make the gearbox more responsive during sporty driving
In models such as the Audi RS6, the BMW M3, the Porsche 911 or the Mercedes-AMG C63, the factory automatic gearbox is deliberately restricted by the manufacturer to maintain comfort. Remapping unlocks the transmission’s true responsiveness: gear changes in a matter of milliseconds, instant kickdown, and lag-free downshifting via paddle shifters – behaviour particularly appreciated on German motorways with no speed limits, which many of our customers frequent regularly.
3. To correct unsatisfactory factory-set behaviour
Certain gearboxes (notably the Stellantis EAT8, Ford PowerShift or dry 7-speed DSG units in urban traffic) exhibit sluggish gear changes, hesitation or a lack of smoothness as standard. Reprogramming smooths out these flaws without compromising reliability.
What reprogramming does NOT do: it does not fix a mechanically faulty gearbox. If your automatic gearbox has proven slipping issues, leaks or abnormal noises, start with a diagnostic check and a MotulEvo oil change before considering reprogramming.

This is the most popular configuration at Shiftech Strasbourg, and by far the most effective: simultaneously remapping the engine and the automatic gearbox. Here’s why this combination is so effective:
- The remapped engine delivers higher torque than the original gearbox can utilise to its full potential
- The reprogrammed gearbox shifts faster and handles the extra torque better
- The two mapping profiles are synchronised to ensure consistent performance

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Automatic gearbox remapping is not limited to tuned vehicles. On a standard vehicle, it enables faster gear changes, better-timed shifts within the rev range, and more responsive gear changes. This is a separate modification in its own right, distinct from engine tuning.
The vast majority of dual-clutch gearboxes (DSG, S tronic, PDK, DKG, EDC) and torque converter gearboxes (EAT, ZF 8HP, Tiptronic) are compatible. CVTs are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the centre with your vehicle’s details (make, model, version) to confirm compatibility.
When carried out correctly, automatic gearbox remapping does not compromise the transmission. By calibrating the safety mechanisms and clutch pressure in line with the engine’s actual torque, it actually reduces the risk of slippage and overheating, which damageunmodified gearboxes.
Yes, this is in fact the recommended procedure. Both remappings are carried out during the same appointment, with validation on a dynamometer. The consistency between the engine mapping and the gearbox mapping is checked before the vehicle is returned.
Between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the complexity of your transmission. For customers coming from Germany, Switzerland or Luxembourg, we organise the appointment so that the work can be carried out on the same day, with a reception area available where you can wait in comfort (Wi-Fi, coffee, television). You can also drop off your vehicle in the morning and collect it at the end of the day.

Our additional services in Strasbourg
To get the most out of your automatic gearbox remapping, certain additional services form a coherent performance ecosystem. Here are the services most commonly combined with automatic gearbox remapping at Shiftech Strasbourg:
→ Stage 1, 2 and 3 engine remapping: The most popular combination among our German motoring enthusiasts. Remapping the engine at the same time as the gearbox to synchronise power, torque and gear changes. Our gearbox mapping is calibrated to handle the extra torque generated by the engine remap, making it particularly well-suited to BMW, Audi, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche models, which are very common in the region. A 5-year software warranty is included with the entire service. → Stage 1, 2 and 3 engine remapping in Strasbourg
→ MotulEvo automatic gearbox oil change: A preventive measure strongly recommended before any automatic gearbox remapping, particularly if your vehicle has exceeded 60,000 km. On Germany’s speed-unlimited motorways and the roads of the Vosges, the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is subjected to greater stress than in normal driving conditions, so rigorous maintenance is essential. Our MotulEvo process guarantees 100 per cent fresh oil and 0 per cent residue. → MotulEvo preventative maintenance for your automatic gearbox in Strasbourg
→ Performance parts and tuning: To complete your vehicle’s tuning, we fit parts from the leading performance brands in our workshop, specifically tailored to the German and premium markets: Akrapovic and Milltek exhaust systems, Eventuri intake systems, and BMC filters. A combination of engine remapping + automatic gearbox + sports exhaust system unlocks your vehicle’s full potential. → Performance parts available at Shiftech Strasbourg
