Tinted windows law for cars 2026: what French regulations really say

Quick summary

  • Reference text: article R316-3 of the Highway Code, amended by decree no. 2016-448 of 13 April 2016, in force since 1 January 2017. No change in 2026.
  • Front windows (windscreen + driver/passenger sides): TLV ≥ 70% mandatory, film included.
  • Rear windows (rear side windows + rear window): no threshold, free tint, provided that both exterior mirrors are functional.
  • Penalty: 4th class fine. Fine of €135 (€90 reduced, €375 increased) + deduction of 3 points + possible immobilisation.
  • Insurance risk: compensation reduced or refused in the event of an accident involving non-compliant front windows.
  • Technical inspection risk: major defect, leading to a compulsory secondary inspection.

In 2026, the question of tinted windows remains one of the most frequently asked by French motorists. Between the quest for thermal comfort, UV protection, aesthetics and privacy, the appeal of solar films continues unabated. However, French regulations remain strict and largely unknown, a misunderstanding that costs drivers thousands of euros every year.

At Shiftech, specialists in automotive performance and customisation for over 15 years, we work with our customers on these issues on a daily basis. Here's a clear, legally sourced and up-to-date breakdown of everything you need to know before tinting your car windows in 2026.

What French law will say in 2026

Contrary to widespread belief, the regulations on tinted windows were not amended in 2026. The reference text remains decree no. 2016-448 of 13 April 2016, which came into force on 1 January 2017 and amended article R316-3 of the Highway Code.

According to the official text published in the Journal officiel: "The transparency of these windows is considered sufficient if the regular light transmission factor is at least 70%"(official source: Légifrance).

The sole criterion is Visible Light Transmission (VLT ): the percentage of light that passes through the glazing, including the film. A TLV of 70% means that 70% of the light passes through the pane, i.e. a very slight tint, almost imperceptible to the naked eye.

Several proposals to relax this rule have been tabled in the French National Assembly in recent years, but to no avail. The 70% TLV threshold will therefore remain the absolute reference in 2026.

Front windows: minimum threshold of 70% TLV

  • Windscreen
  • Driver's side window
  • Front passenger side window → minimum TLV: 70% (glass + film combined)

The windscreen and the two front side windows (driver and passenger) must achieve a minimum TLV of 70%, including film.

A technical point that is often overlooked: factory-fitted original glazing is already lightly tinted, with a TLV that varies from 70% to 92% depending on the manufacturer. Adding a film, even a very clear one, can be enough to bring the vehicle below the legal threshold.

Rear windows: no transparency threshold

  • Rear side windows
  • Rear window
  • Glass sunroof → No legal limit, provided the vehicle has two functional exterior mirrors (article R316-1 of the Highway Code).

at the rear of the vehicle (rear side windows and rear window), the law imposes no minimum light transmission. A film with 5% TLV, or even almost total obscuration, is legal.

There is just one technical condition: if the rear window is heavily tinted and compromises visibility via the inside rear-view mirror, the vehicle must have two functional outside rear-view mirrors (left and right), in accordance with Article R316-1. This condition is automatically met on all modern vehicles.

Penalties and risks for non-compliant tinted windows

Fines and points

Failure to comply with the 70% front-end threshold is a 4th class offence (Article R316-3-1 of the Highway Code):

Penalty Amount / Consequence
Reduced fine (payment within 15 days) 90 €
Fixed fine 135 €
Increased fine 375 €
Maximum in court 750 €
Loss of licence points 3 points
Immobilisation of the vehicle Possible

Insurance in the event of an accident

Over and above the road penalty, driving with non-compliant windows can affect your insurer's cover in the event of an accident. If the expert report establishes that excessive tinting has contributed to an accident, for example by reducing night-time visibility, compensation may be reduced or even refused on the grounds of increased risk.

In the case of glass damage, the excess covers the glazing but not the film, which will have to be replaced at your expense.

Roadworthiness tests

Since roadworthiness tests have been tightened up, tinted windows are now systematically checked. A TLV of less than 70% at the front is now classed as a major defect, leading to a compulsory secondary inspection within two months.

Special cases of tinted windows law

Medical exemptions and special vehicles

A medical exemption exists for certain light-sensitive diseases (lupus, protoporphyria, certain skin diseases). This allows front windows to be tinted to a greater extent, on presentation of a validated medical certificate.

Armoured vehicles, which are mainly used for transporting cash or VIPs, also benefit from special rules under the Highway Code.

abroad: check local legislation

A film that conforms in France may not conform elsewhere in Europe. Belgium applies a similar threshold of 70% to the front, but other countries impose different rules. Before a long journey abroad, check the regulations of the country you are passing through.

Why tint your windows legally?

The real benefits of compliant film

Even within the legal framework, a quality solar film offers real benefits:

  • Heat reduction: up to 60% less heat in the passenger compartment
  • UV filtration: up to 99% of UV rays blocked (skin and plastic protection)
  • Visual comfort: significant reduction in glare
  • fuel economy: less use of air conditioning
  • Safety: glass stays in place in the event of breakage

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the law on tinted windows

Is it possible to tint the rear window 100%?

Yes, this is legally permitted, provided that the vehicle is fitted with two functional exterior rear-view mirrors.

What do you risk during a police check?

a €135 fine, a deduction of 3 points from your driving licence and possible immobilisation of your vehicle. Recovery of points: 3 years without a further offence.

Is the rule the same throughout the European Union?

No. While Belgium applies a similar threshold of 70%, other European countries have different rules. Always check local legislation before travelling abroad.

Is my imported vehicle with factory-tinted windows legal?

Not necessarily. If the measured TLV is less than 70% at the front, the vehicle will have to be brought into compliance, even if the tint is original factory tint.
