Percentage of tinted windows: what rate should you choose depending on your car and how you use it?

Quick summary

  • The percentage corresponds to the TLV (Visible Light Transmission): a 35% film lets 35% of the light through.
  • Front windows: 70% minimum TLV required by law (glass + film combined).
  • Rear windows: no legal limit, from 5% to 70% depending on your use.
  • Most versatile percentage: 35% at the rear, the perfect balance between privacy, aesthetics and visibility.
  • For a family: 20 to 35% at the rear (UV protection for children).
  • For a sports car or premium vehicle: 5 to 20% in the rear (looks + maximum privacy).
  • For a professional van: 5% to the rear (to secure equipment).
  • Don't forget that your car's windows may already be tinted

5 %, 20 %, 35 %, 50 %, 70 %... When it comes to tinting your windows, choosing the right percentage can quickly become a headache. Too light? The visual and thermal effect will be virtually nil. Too dark? You risk being fined or having your visibility impaired.

At Shiftech, every day we work with enthusiasts who want to tint their car windows without making a mistake. And the first thing we tell them is thatthere isn't one right percentage for everyone: there's a percentage that's right for your car, your use and your profile.

Here's our complete guide to making the right choice in 2026, with a clear visual comparison and our recommendations from car styling experts.

Understanding what the percentage of tinted windows really means

Percentage = TLV (Visible Light Transmission)

When we talk about "35% tinted film", we are actually referring to the TLV, i.e. the amount of light that actually passes through the pane, including the film.

  • High TLV (70%, 80%) = virtually transparent pane, little visible tinting
  • Low TLV (5%, 20%) = heavily darkened glass, high level of privacy.

Beware of the marketing trap: some sellers advertise a "tint" percentage (= blocked light) instead of the TLV percentage (= transmitted light). Always ask for the TLV figure, it's the only reliable legal and technical data.

The legal reminder: what you can really choose

Front windows: legal threshold of 70

French law (decree no. 2016-448, article R316-3 of the Highway Code) requires a minimum TLV of 70% on the windscreen and the two front side windows. Any film that brings the combined TLV (glass + film) below this threshold is illegal.

Rear windows: total freedom

at the rear (rear side windows + rear window), there are no legal restrictions. You can reduce the TLV to as little as 5% without breaking the law, as long as you have two functional exterior mirrors (a standard that is automatically met on modern vehicles).

What percentage depends on your car?

The right percentage depends largely on the type of vehicle you drive and the effect you want to achieve.

Saloon and city car

Recommendation: 35% rear

This is the most versatile percentage. Dark enough to add character and privacy, light enough to maintain good visibility of the rear-view mirror. Ideal for balanced everyday use.

SUV and family 4×4

Recommendation: 20 to 35% in the rear

SUVs have larger windows, so a 35% film offers excellent UV protection for children in the rear, while maintaining a comfortable rear view. For a more assertive look, go down to 20%.

Sports and prestige vehicles

Recommendation: 5% to 20% at the rear

On a sports car or a premium car, a dark tint contributes to the vehicle's visual identity. A 5% film ("limousine") offers the most radical effect, but greatly reduces night-time visibility. A 20% film is often a better compromise for road use.

Commercial vehicles

Recommendation: 5% rear

Commercial vehicles often carry expensive equipment. A 5% film, totally opaque, completely conceals the contents of the vehicle and provides simple, effective anti-theft protection.

What percentage of your windows should be tinted, depending on how you use them?

Everyday urban driving

Recommendation: 35% to 50% to the rear

In town, you need good peripheral vision for pedestrians, cyclists and manoeuvres. A moderate percentage (35% minimum) ensures optimum safety while filtering out the summer heat.

Long motorway journeys

Recommendation: 20 to 35% at the rear + transparent thermal film at the front

On the motorway, the cumulative heat can turn the passenger compartment into a furnace. Combine a medium-dark film at the rear with a transparent thermal film at the front (TLV ≥ 70%) for optimum comfort, without loss of visibility.

Frequent night-time drivers

Recommendation: minimum 50% rear light

The darker the tint, the more night-time visibility is reduced - including to the rear via the interior rear-view mirror. If you often drive at night (taxi, VTC, professionals), stick to higher percentages (minimum 50% rear).

Families with young children

Recommendation: 20 to 35% at the rear

UV protection is crucial for children's sensitive skin. Film that filters out up to 99% of UV rays can be found in all ranges - the important thing is not so much the percentage as the quality of the film. A well-chosen 35% protects just as well as a cheap 5%.

Medical sensitivity or photophobia

Recommendation: clear UV film on the front + 35% on the back

For people suffering from dermatological pathologies (lupus, protoporphyria), a medical exemption allows them to go below the legal threshold of 70% on the front, on presentation of a validated medical certificate.

Mistakes to avoid when choosing your shade percentage

  1. Choosing too dark a percentage without testing night-time visibility
  2. Forgetting that the original window is already tinted
  3. Don't confuse the tint percentage with the TLV percentage
  4. Apply tinted film yourself
  5. Mixing the percentages between the side windows and the rear window

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about percentages

What is the most popular percentage of tinted windows?

35% is by far the most popular percentage for rear windows. It offers the ideal balance between privacy, aesthetics and visibility.

What percentage is legally the darkest?

at the rear, you can go as low as 5% TLV ("limousine" effect, almost opaque). at the front, the legal minimum is 70% TLV.

Can you really see 70% film?

Very little. at 70%, the visual effect is almost imperceptible, but the film can still block up to 99% of UV rays and a significant proportion of infrared heat.

Does the percentage affect UV protection?

Not directly. A 70% quality film can block 99% of UV, just as much as a 5% film. It's the film technology (ceramic, metallised, hybrid) that determines UV protection, not the percentage.
