Prepared or not? Peugeot Expert 1.5 BlueHDI: more torque, less fuel

What if a van could combine rigorous accounting with driving pleasure? In this episode of Prépa ou pas, the team tackles an atypical case: that of Arnaud, a chartered accountant by training, whose Peugeot Expert 1.5 BlueHDI 120 became the guinea pig for a Stage 1 reprogramming. The aim was not to turn it into a racing machine, but to give it more drive, more flexibility and a bit more character... without compromising reliability.

An accountant, a van... and a few warning lights

Arnaud isn't the type to tinker with turbos in his garage. His relationship with the car is pragmatic: efficiency, autonomy, economy. His Peugeot Expert is his multi-purpose tool: trips from home to the rubbish tip, camping-car escapades and everyday journeys. In short, practicality.

But his vehicle had a few quirks:

  • ABS, ESP and tyre pressure warning lights on,
  • Left rear wheel sensor out of order,
  • Bodywork 'optimised' by a few well-placed blows...

Despite these minor faults, the engine ran perfectly. So there was nothing to stop it going to the dyno for a Stage 1 reprogramming.

Switching to the bench: the reality in figures

Before any preparation, let's hear the verdict of the power bench. The original results: 115 bhp and 288 Nm of torque. Not ridiculous, but a little short when the Expert is loaded up or being driven on mountain roads.

After optimisation: 150.8 bhp and 327.7 Nm. That's a gain of more than 30bhp and almost 40Nm. In practical terms, this translates into an engine that is more available, that picks up sooner, and that is less tiring to drive uphill or with weight on board. The 1.5 BlueHDI is particularly receptive to this type of optimisation.

Road test: comfort that changes everything

Arnaud took the wheel again, and his first comment was simple:

"You feel more torque, it's more responsive. "

And yet his driving style remains unchanged: composed, safe, far from aggressive. No big accelerations: just more everyday comfort. Smooth acceleration is enough to convince. Even the sceptics in the team admit that the difference is clear...

There is one downside: the ABS is out of order. No immediate danger, but a repair is planned soon.

Reprogramming, not just for enthusiasts

This project shows that engine reprogramming is not just for thrill-seekers. It can also be of interest to rational people who are concerned about fuel consumption, versatility and cost per kilometre. With over 1,000 km of range and improved torque management, the Peugeot Expert becomes a more enjoyable partner on the road, without sacrificing economy.

Conclusion: a logical choice

The benefits of a Stage 1 on a diesel van are clear:

  • +30bhp without mechanical risk,
  • Optimised torque for busy or hilly journeys,
  • Smoother, more comfortable driving,
  • Possibility of reducing fuel consumption by driving more smoothly.

Arnaud, for his part, isn't becoming a fan of mechanical engineering. But he is gaining a vehicle better suited to his needs. And in the mountains of the Cantal, his Peugeot Expert will now have enough response to tackle the hills without flinching.

What about you?

Do you drive a commercial vehicle, a company fleet or even a compact family car? Engine reprogramming can transform your driving experience. You don't have to be an enthusiast to feel the benefits: more comfort, more pleasure, and potential savings to boot. Like Arnaud, let the figures do the talking... and enjoy the difference.
