E85 conversion on Golf 8 1.5 TSI: what it really changes
For several years, owners of Golf 8s equipped with the 1.5 TSI engine were met with the same answer: it couldn't be reprogrammed. Not because of a lack of know-how, but because Volkswagen had progressively blocked access to the ECU on vehicles produced from 2020 onwards. This restriction has now been lifted. Here's what this means in practical terms.

Why the 1.5 TSI was blocked
The 1.5 TSI in Golf 8 models is fitted with a Bosch MG1CS011 ECU. This ECU incorporates specific software protections that prevent any reading or writing via conventional OBD or bench protocols.
Manufacturers regularly update these protections to counter the reprogramming tools available on the market. In the case of the MG1CS011, the window closed quickly after the first Golf 8s: a firmware update locked access to the units produced from 2020 onwards. Customers who went to the centre were told that their vehicle could not be fitted. This is understandable: if we can't guarantee the stability of the reprogramming, we don't do it.
The situation changed in May 2026, thanks to the latest AutoTuner solutions, which now allow this ECU to be unlocked via an unlock procedure.

What unlock means in practice
Unlocking is not reprogramming. It is an essential preliminary step that provides secure access to the ECU, without which no intervention is possible.
The process takes place in three stages: the ECU is removed from the vehicle by our technicians, sent to a specialist service provider for unlocking, then reinstalled before the reprogramming is carried out on the bench.
The vehicle is immobilised for around a week (7 working days, including transport). This is a point that needs to be anticipated, particularly for an everyday or company car. Our teams take care of all the logistics.

Real gains on a 1.5 TSI 116 bhp
We put this into practice with a Golf 8 estate 1.5 TSI 116 bhp, manual gearbox, 20,000 km on the clock. The dyno test before reprogramming showed 113.4 bhp and 227 Nm, in line with the manufacturer's claims.
After unlocking the ECU and Flex+ reprogramming (E85 compatibility and Stage 1 equivalent gains):
- Power: 182 bhp (+69 bhp)
- Torque: 314 Nm (+87 Nm)
That's +69 bhp and +87 Nm on a 1.5-litre engine. The gain in torque at low revs is the most noticeable transformation in everyday driving: on a long gearbox like the Golf 8, getting 90 Nm back between 1,500 and 2,000 rpm fundamentally changes the driving experience. The car no longer needs to pull in the clutch when starting off, nor does it need to downshift on the motorway at 130 km/h.

Would you like to experience this on your vehicle, in front of the camera?
That's exactly the idea behind "Prépa ou pas", our YouTube format in which Médéric and the Shiftech team accompany an owner from A to Z as he prepares his vehicle. Diagnosis, bench test, reprogramming, test drive: everything is filmed and shared with our community.
Engine reprogramming is offered to selected participants. Parts, unlocking services and ancillary services remain the responsibility of the owner.

The fuel equation: for whom is it profitable?
The fuel equation: for whom it pays off
The 1.5 TSI is an engine designed for long-distance drivers and families. This is precisely the profile for which E85 conversion makes the most sense.
Here's an example based on a 60 km/day return journey on a motorway/expressway profile:
| Without E85 | With E85 | |
|---|---|---|
| Consumption per 100 km | ~6,3 L | ~8,5 L* |
| Price per litre | ~2,00 € | ~0,75 € |
| Cost per 100 km | ~12,60 € | ~6,40 € |
| savings per 100 km | ~6,20 € | |
| savings over 15,000 km/year | ~930 € |
*Volume consumption increases with E85 (20% on average), but the cost at the pump is halved or more.
at 15,000 km/year, the return on investment for the full service (unlock + Flex+) is less than two years. For a frequent driver at 30,000 km/year, it's less than a year.
The three performance levels available on 1.5 TSI
Since the release of the MG1CS011, three levels of intervention are available for these engines.
Stage 1 reprogramming: mapping developed on a power bench, +45 bhp and +100 Nm. Suitable if you run on SP95/SP98 and are looking above all for driving pleasure.
Ethanol reprogramming: switch to E85 superethanol without an additional box. The mapping is adapted directly in the ECU. Performance remains close to that of the original; the aim is to save fuel.
Flex+ reprogramming: a combination of the two. E85 compatibility and gains equivalent to Stage 1. This is the solution applied to the Golf 8 in the video.

Which vehicles are concerned
The Bosch MG1CS011 ECU will be fitted to all VAG Group 1.5 TSI and 1.5 TFSI engines produced from 2020 onwards:
Volkswagen: Golf, Polo, Passat, Tiguan, T-Roc, Arteon, Taigo, Caddy
Audi : A1, A3, A4, A5, Q2, Q3
Seat / Cupra: Ibiza, Leon, Arona, Ateca, Formentor, Tarraco
Skoda: Fabia, Octavia, Superb, Kamiq, Karoq, Kodiaq
If your vehicle is on this list and was produced after 2020, it is affected by the pre-unlock procedure.
What it costs
On a 1.5 TSI requiring an unlock, the price varies according to the exact engine and the conditions of the operation. To obtain a precise quote for your vehicle, contact your nearest Shiftech centre.
