Why reprogram your automatic gearbox?
Here are the three scenarios the Saint-Priest team deals with most frequently.
1. To carry out a Stage 1, 2 or 3 engine remapping
A tuned engine delivers more torque, but this torque isn’t confined to the engine: it passes entirely through the gearbox. On a BMW M340i or an Audi S4 upgraded to Stage 2, the gain can be as much as 30 to 40 per cent extra torque, whilst the internal clutches of the automatic gearbox remain unchanged. Without recalibration, they eventually slip under load, sometimes even forcing the ECU to cut power in limited-performance mode. Reprogramming the gearbox at the same time as the engine prevents this mismatch.
2. To make the gearbox more responsive during sporty driving
On the A7 heading south or the A43 towards Chambéry, long stretches at a steady speed often reveal the limitations of a gearbox calibrated for comfort rather than for sharp gear changes. A Golf R, an RS3 or a Cayman have a reserve of responsiveness that the manufacturer has deliberately toned down for everyday use. Reprogramming the gearbox isn’t about altering its capabilities, but about removing the restrictions.
3. To correct unsatisfactory factory-set behaviour
The Lyon bypass and the Fourvière tunnel impose a pattern of stop-and-go driving that some standard gearboxes struggle with: the EAT8 from Stellantis, the PowerShift from Ford, and the dry 7-speed DSG in heavy traffic. These jerks, frequently reported by the centre’s customers, do not indicate a mechanical fault but rather mapping that is poorly suited to this type of traffic. Recalibration is usually sufficient to smooth out the overall performance.
What reprogramming does NOT do: it does not fix a transmission that is mechanically faulty. If your automatic gearbox has proven slippage issues, leaks or abnormal noises, start with a diagnostic check and a MotulEvo oil change before considering reprogramming.

This is the most popular configuration at Shiftech Lyon, and by far the most effective: simultaneously remapping the engine and the automatic gearbox. Here’s why this combination is so effective:
- The remapped engine delivers higher torque than the original gearbox can utilise to the full
- The reprogrammed gearbox shifts faster and handles the additional torque more effectively
- The two mapping profiles are synchronised to ensure consistent performance

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Automatic gearbox remapping is not limited to tuned vehicles. On a standard vehicle, it enables faster gear changes, better-timed shifts within the rev range, and more responsive gear changes. This is a separate modification in its own right, distinct from engine tuning.
The vast majority of dual-clutch gearboxes (DSG, S tronic, PDK, DKG, EDC) and torque converter gearboxes (EAT, ZF 8HP, Tiptronic) are compatible. CVTs are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the centre with your vehicle’s details (make, model, version) to confirm compatibility.
When carried out correctly, automatic gearbox remapping does not compromise the transmission. By calibrating the safety mechanisms and clutch pressure in line with the engine’s actual torque, it actually reduces the risk of slippage and overheating, which damageunmodified gearboxes.
Yes, this is in fact the recommended procedure. Both remappings are carried out during the same appointment, with validation on a dynamometer. The consistency between the engine mapping and the gearbox mapping is checked before the vehicle is returned.

Work on an automatic gearbox is often accompanied by other requirements, which are dealt with in the following order at the Saint-Priest centre:
→ Ensuring the gearbox is in good working order before reprogramming: Sébastien systematically checks the condition of the fluid before any reprogramming takes place. A MotulEvo fluid change is essential whenever the service history is unclear, to ensure a reliable mechanical system. → Preventative maintenance of the automatic gearbox
→ Completing the project with the engine: Stage 1, 2, 3 or E85 conversion – the engine is often part of the same project as the gearbox. Both ECUs are then recalibrated in tandem to ensure the car delivers a consistent response, from the accelerator right through to gear changes. → Engine remapping at our centre in Lyon
→ Carry out diagnostics before remapping: on a vehicle with already erratic behaviour, a full electronic diagnostic check helps distinguish between genuine mechanical faults and issues that can be resolved through recalibration. → Full electronic diagnostics before any work is carried out
