A visit to Drift Shop: behind the scenes at a parts warehouse worth over 5 million euros

At Shiftech, we love to take a look behind the scenes at the people who keep the sport alive. This time, Médéric set off for Ensisheim in eastern France to visit Steve Leiber, co-founder of DriftShop. The aim of the trip was to collect parts and tyres in preparation for the next round of the French Drift Championship, whilst also taking a look at the brand’s new logistics facilities.

A journey of over 550 km to prepare for the next round

Before each round of the championship, sourcing parts and tyres is a key part of the preparations. With this in mind, Médéric travelled more than 550 km from home to meet Steve and collect the equipment needed for the next race.

Once there, he headed straight for Drift Shop’s new logistics centre: a huge building that now houses all the parts sold on the Drift Shop and BPS Racing websites.

First stop: the exhausts and body kits section

The first stop on the tour is the section dedicated to exhaust systems and body kits. There, Steve presents a body kit inspired by the E46 style, but adapted for the E36: a unique component that can bend, absorb an impact or even be driven over without breaking. A real advantage over traditional fibreglass bumpers, which tend to shatter at the slightest impact.

Following the acquisition of BPS Racing, Drift Shop now also offers performance parts, in addition to its long-standing range. The first section of the building, which houses this department amongst others, covers 3,500 m².

Second stop: the suspension bridge walkway

Next, head to the suspension aisle, where a wide range of products are available in stock. Among them, Versus suspension components stand out for their excellent value for money. These are in high demand, particularly amongst drivers with a very aggressive driving style, such as Sofiane Yazid, who has already broken several suspension units this season.

Third stop: a stock of non-standard tyres

Tyres remain one of the most complex aspects to manage in drifting: you generally need to plan your manoeuvres well in advance. Drift Shop helps you get round this challenge thanks to its particularly extensive stock of tyres. Whilst there, Médéric takes the opportunity to seek Steve’s advice on choosing his own tyres.

Robots that are transforming order fulfilment

The second part of the tour: the area dedicated to automation. Drift Shop has chosen to equip its logistics centre with 14 robots.

Before they were installed, the best order picker would walk up to 19 km a day, with much of that time simply spent walking between the shelves. Now, the robots are responsible for retrieving the shelves containing the stock and taking them directly to the picking stations. The order picker simply has to collect the required items, finalise the order, or consolidate it with larger items that the robots cannot carry.

The second cell: an even larger extension

The tour continues into the building’s second unit: a further 4,500 m² extension, reaching a height of 14 metres. A symbol of Drift Shop’s impressive growth, having started out in a simple warehouse before adding further units over the years, until reaching a new milestone with this fully-fledged logistics centre.

This part of the building is now dedicated to surplus stock, which enables the robots and picking stations to be continuously restocked. Every evening, teams come in to replenish the stock to cope with a volume that sometimes exceeds 1,000 orders a day.

Interview with Steve: the origins of Drift Shop

How did Drift Shop come about?

Steve, a mechanic by trade, and Nico, a webmaster by trade, were both drifters in the early 2000s. Back then, sourcing parts for the sport was already a real struggle. Nico then came up with the idea of setting up a website to sell parts in France, initially to fund their passion and make ends meet. Over time, the two founders eventually left their respective jobs to devote themselves entirely to Drift Shop.

Drift Shop in figures

  • Between 800 and 1,000 orders processed every day
  • €25 million in turnover by 2025, growing year on year
  • 48 to 49 employees
  • €5.5 million worth of stock
  • 13,000 items in stock, 8,000 of which are managed by robots
  • Europe’s largest stock of performance parts
  • 40 per cent of turnover generated internationally, a share that Drift Shop aims to continue growing, with its sights set on the US market
  • Parts developed under the Drift Shop brand (exhausts, front-end kits, steering wheels, seats, etc.), with further products to follow
  • €7 million invested in the building, and €1 million in robotic automation

A visit that ends with a look at the tyres for the next round

The visit ends as it began: with preparations for the next round. Médéric and Steve collect the tyres that will be fitted to his car for the next round of the championship straight from the storage container.
