Bosch MD1CS004 / MD1CS104 Calculator: almost all VAG 2.0 TDI diesel engines can finally be remapped

The MD1CS004 is the engine control unit that controls the vast majority of the VAG Group’s 2.0 TDI engines from the 2020–2021 model years right through to the 2025 models. It manages fuel injection, common rail pressure, particulate filter regeneration and engine torque on this generation of diesel engines.

The MD1CS104 is its variant designed for commercial vehicle engines, notably the all-new Transporter T6.1. It shares the same technical basis, but with calibration adapted for commercial use: load, cruising speed and thermal management over long cycles.

Both ECUs share the same hardware architecture (TC298/TC389 microcontroller) but have different software locks depending on the version and year of production.

Some vehicles fitted with the MD1CS004 were already reprogrammable. However, with the increasing number of manufacturer updates, many newer versions had switched to software protections that we could no longer bypass.

The MD1CS104, the utility version, was simply not supported.

At Shiftech, we can now remove this restriction using a two-step procedure:

1. Hardware unlock: the ECU is sent to us to remove the manufacturer’s software protection
2. Bench: once unlocked, full read/write access on the test bench becomes complete, fast and reliable, directly in our workshop

This procedure can only be carried out once per ECU.

The recently launched Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 is fitted with the MD1CS104, a version that was previously not open to any remapping. This is one of the most significant changes in this protocol update.

For a commercial vehicle, the benefit is not just a matter of driving feel, even though the 2.0 TDI 110 CH with a Stage 1 tune increases power by +80 CH and torque by +170 M. In a Transporter used for commercial purposes, torque available earlier and better responsiveness under full load directly translate into less strain on the engine when loaded, safer acceleration on the motorway when fully laden, and less tiring daily use for both the vehicle and the driver.

At Shiftech, the Transporter T6.1 2.0 TDI is now covered in the same way as the passenger car models in the VAG range.
