Flex Fluel box or ethanol reprogramming: which solution should you choose to convert your car to E85?
What if your next fuel bill could be halved without changing your car?
In 2026, that's exactly what Superéthanol-E85 will enable you to do, a fast-growing fuel that is winning over more and more French motorists. More than 418,000 drivers have already taken the plunge, while ethanol consumption in France has increased fivefold since 2018.
Cheaper at the pump, more economical in the long term and compatible with a wide range of vehicles, E85 is attracting new enthusiasts every year in their quest to save money in the face of rising fuel prices.
But to run on Superethanol-E85, you need to adapt your vehicle. There are two solutions: install an approved ethanol box or reprogramme the engine control unit.
Price, reliability, legality, performance, compatibility: we compare these two options in detail to help you choose the solution best suited to your vehicle, and above all to maximise your savings at the pumps.

The benefits of converting to E85 in 2026
Before comparing the two technical solutions, let's remind ourselves why converting to E85 is more relevant than ever in 2026.
The weighted average price of E85 is around €0.75 to €0.76/litre at the start of 2026, compared with around €1.80/litre for SP95-E10. A considerable difference. In 2025, this would represent savings of 42% for a motorist, or around €700 a year for 13,000 km travelled, after taking into account a 25% increase in fuel consumption.
Fuel prices in April 2026 :
| Type of fuel | Average price |
| Superethanol E85 | 0,76 €/L |
| Unleaded 95-E10 | 2,01 €/L |
| Unleaded 95-E5 | 2,07 €/L |
| Leadfree 98 | 2,10 €/L |
To follow fuel prices in real time in France, or to find service stations offering Superethanol E85, we recommend these websites:
Thanks to its local production and controlled manufacturing costs, the price of Superéthanol-E85 will remain comfortably below €1 per litre in 2026, even against a backdrop of general inflation on fossil fuels.
From an environmental point of view, Superethanol-E85 reduces net CO₂ emissions by an average of 50% and fine particles by up to 90% compared with fossil petrol.
Finally, accessibility is no longer a problem: more than 4,000 service stations distribute Superethanol-E85, meaning that 93% of French people live within 10 km of an E85 station
In short, there's no shortage of reasons to switch to E85. All that remains is to choose how.
Is your vehicle suitable for ethanol?
That's the first question you should ask yourself. The good news is that 9 out of 10 cars can run on E85.
All unleaded petrol vehicles complying with the Euro 3 standard (and more recent versions), i.e. since 2001, are compatible with E85.
The type of injection is the decisive technical criterion:
- Indirect injection (the majority of vehicles before 2010): simple and reliable conversion, box or reprogramming works very well.
- Direct injection (recent engines): conversion is more complex. Approved ethanol boxes quickly show their limitations on these engines, with difficulties in managing high injection pressures and sometimes incomplete adaptation of injection times. In this case, flexfuel reprogramming offers a much more refined and appropriate approach.
please note: E85 conversion only applies to petrol vehicles. Diesel vehicles are excluded.
If in doubt, Shiftech will carry out a preliminary diagnosis to check the compatibility of your vehicle before any work is carried out.

Ethanol box
The Flex Fluel ethanol box: how does it work?
How does the E85 box work?
The conversion unit is installed in the engine compartment, between the original ECU and the injectors. Once in place, it constantly analyses the proportion of E85 in the mixture and automatically adjusts the quantity of fuel injected. Since bioethanol contains less energy per litre than petrol, the box commands a larger injection to ensure optimum engine performance, whatever the proportion of E85 in the tank.
The vehicle can then run on SP95, SP98 or E85.
The advantages
- Official approval is the undeniable advantage of the box. The French legal framework, defined by the decree of 30 November 2017, precisely frames the conditions for approval of E85 conversion devices. Certified manufacturers have obtained approval for their boxes for specific families of vehicles, enabling motorists to change their registration documents to state "FE" (Flex-fuel Ethanol) in complete legality, a major advantage for administrative compliance and vehicle resale.
- FlexFluel: your vehicle can run on both ethanol and lead-free petrol
- Financial assistance: several regions offer grants of up to €500 to support conversion to E85, which can significantly reduce the cost of the operation.
The drawbacks
- The main drawback of the box is its generic settings. It is designed for a family of engines and does not take into account the state of wear or the exact specifications of your vehicle. Engine management is functional, but not 100% optimised for your particular vehicle.
- Certification of cheap boxes: Many boxes sold online for self-installation are not certified.
- Installation time: fitting the box generally requires a day's downtime for the vehicle to be installed and adjusted.
- Cost of installation: you need to budget from €859, which is more than you would pay for ethanol reprogramming.
What budget should you allow for the installation of your box?
At Shiftech we offer conversion with an approved box, installed by experienced and certified technicians, using professional quality equipment. This represents an investment from €859.

E85 reprogramming
E85 reprogramming: the tailor-made solution
How does ethanol reprogramming work?
When we think of engine reprogramming, we generally think of an increase in power. That's true, but it's also the most precise solution for converting a petrol vehicle to bioethanol. Unlike the additional box, no physical components are added: everything is done directly via the ECU.
Here's how the operation works at Shiftech:
- Appointment and full diagnosis of the vehicle - engine condition, injection system, data reading.
- Extraction of the original mapping from the ECU via the OBD socket or on the bench.
- The mapper's work: in-depth modification of engine parameters (injection time, ignition advance, richness management) to make the engine flex-fuel. Each adjustment is made to measure, according to your vehicle's specific engine and its actual condition, not according to a generic model.
- Tests in real-life conditions: we use E85 to carry out tests, followed by driving and checking engine logs to validate the settings.
The benefits
- Tailor-made is what fundamentally distinguishes reprogramming from the box. The mapping is adapted to the actual condition of your engine, guaranteeing optimum mechanical reliability over time. On direct injection engines in particular, this is often the only truly reliable solution.
- The price is the other strong argument: for E85 reprogramming at Shiftech, you should expect to pay from €599, i.e. two or three times less than an approved box, for a result that is often superior.
- No visible physical changes under the bonnet: discreet, clean, and with no impact on roadworthiness tests.
- FlexFluel: your vehicle can run on both ethanol and unleaded petrol
- Returning your vehicle to its original state: Are you selling your vehicle or changing your mind? Shiftech guarantees to return your vehicle to its original configuration free of charge for 5 years.
Disadvantages
- No vehicle registration document provided: engine reprogramming changes the vehicle's technical characteristics. It may require a declaration to the relevant authorities and administrative adaptation, which remains the responsibility of the owner.
- ECU compatibility: if your vehicle's ECU is locked or protected by the manufacturer, it may be impossible to read/write on certain recent models.
Shiftech carries out tailor-made E85 reprogramming for the vast majority of petrol vehicles. With experienced technicians and real-life tests.

Can you run on E85 Superethanol without a box or reprogramming?
It's a legitimate question, especially when you're looking to save money quickly. The answer is yes, but the technical reality is as follows: your original engine ECU is calibrated to run on conventional petrol. however, E85 has a lower energy density than petrol, so for equivalent power, the engine generally has to inject a greater quantity of fuel.
Without adaptation, the ECU will try to compensate by itself, but it has its limits. Once these limits are exceeded, two things happen: an engine warning light comes on, and above all, the air/fuel mixture becomes too lean. eventually, the engine may break down.
In other words, driving on E85 without conversion means taking the risk of turning a saving of a few centimes per litre into a repair bill of several thousand euros. The cost of conversion via a box or reprogramming pays for itself in a few months. It's better to do it right from the start.
Our recommendation: housing or reprogramming?
In the vast majority of cases, E85 reprogramming is the best solution: more precise, less expensive and better suited to your engine. Above all, it is the solution that is most respectful of the engine's mechanics over the long term. Fitting a generic box to a tired or direct-injection engine is not a recommended approach.
However, an approved ECU remains the preferred solution in two specific cases: if you need the 'FE' endorsement on your vehicle registration document, or if your ECU is locked and incompatible with reprogramming.
There are many brands of ECU on the market today (FlexFuel, Biomotors, eFlexFluel). At Shiftech, we choose to work only with solutions that we know perfectly well, and whose operation and reliability we have mastered, in order to guarantee a clean conversion with no nasty surprises for our customers.
