Exhaust valves: How do they control sound?
Exhaust valves, also known as exhaust flaps, are mechanical devices located in the exhaust system of a car. They play a crucial role in modulating the sound produced by the vehicle, allowing drivers to control the noise level of their car. This is essential to comply with noise regulations and also to allow the sound to be customised to the driver's preferences.
In theory, the valves work quite simply. When the exhaust gas from the engine reaches the valve, it can be opened or closed, depending on various factors such as engine speed, vehicle speed and the chosen driving style.
When the valve is open, the exhaust gases flow freely through the exhaust line, creating a louder, deeper engine sound. On the other hand, when the valve is closed, the exhaust gases are redirected through resonance chambers or additional silencers that attenuate the sound, making the engine quieter.
It is the modulation of the opening and closing of these valves that creates the variations in sound we hear when we accelerate, decelerate or change driving mode. In the majority of cases, this is managed by the engine control unit (ECU), which prevents the driver from having total control of the valves as desired.
