Stage 3 engine preparation on the BMW M5 woodwork

Today we're tackling the preparation of the very first M5 in the woodwork, a car that you've already seen in our videos a little while ago, to save the automatic gearbox with Motul and their MotulEvo. A rescue that went very well indeed, as there were no more problems with it.

After passing through the hands of several owners, it's not in top form as it produces less than 600 bhp in stage 2, whereas at its prime, it produced 740 bhp.

It's now time to give it a new lease of life by dismantling the turbos and sending them to TTE, TTH or another repair shop, provided the repair time is short and the price is right.

Dismantling turbos and diagnosing engine condition

The technicians at the Shiftech Tours workshop worked around the car to remove the turbos. To do this, they had to remove a few covers, but after that we're pretty pleased with the state of the engine. You can see black on the apron, which means that the exhaust downpipes are broken, so they'll have to be replaced. A special feature of this S63 engine is that the turbos are in the centre. The manifolds are crossed, which means that the flows from bank 1 and bank 2 are mixed in the exhaust manifolds. The turbos are at the top, so they're easy to remove. We're also going to dismantle the high-pressure pumps, coil spark plugs and injectors to overhaul the top section.

Turbo refurbishment, feasible or not?

With the turbos now dismantled, it's time to think about what to do next. Either we send them to TTE so they can rebuild them as new and modify them for stage 3 preparation, or we fit new ones. We're hoping they'll be able to work on them, because if they're cracked, it'll be impossible to do anything.

The downpipes go on holiday

When Lucien brought us the car, we thought it was making a noise, but we weren't sure where it was coming from, and we also had some lambda sensor faults. In the end, we found that it was the downpipe that was cut because the solder had gone on holiday, which prevented the lambda sensors from getting the right information.

If Lucien had fitted (3 years earlier) quality performance parts from major brands such as Remus, Akrapovis, Supersprint or others, the part would have developed a patina over time but would not have broken like it did here. So if you want an engine preparation that lasts over time, remember to go for quality if your budget allows.

BMC Sport air filter

The M5 was also fitted with BMC sport air filters, which, as you'll recall, allow better air to enter the intake, resulting in lower temperatures and better performance. Here, they're a little tired, so they'll be replaced by new ones (available from our e-commerce site).

The state of the M5's turbos

Taking a closer look at the M5 's turbos in the woodwork, it's clear that they're tired... They've taken a few chips and have some play, but they're obviously still complete and functional. On the other hand, there are chips in the compressor, and the exhaust turbine has a chip too- in short, they really need attention!

The aim is to fit reinforced bearings and a bigger exhaust wheel to get more flow, as well as complete balancing to make everything reliable and efficient. We're certainly looking at a month's work in the TTE workshops.

The air/water heat exchangers will also be replaced to ensure even colder temperatures and maximum power.

Turbos powered by TTH

originally, we'd planned to send the turbos to TTE, but they had far too long lead times and claimed lower performance than TTH. So we changed our minds and had them made by TTH. This was only the second time we've worked with this brand, but it was also an opportunity to test the results for you. We received our hybrid turbos (modified turbos) and the verdict is clear: everything looks good and well executed... Hot body, cold body, chra, is as good as new, so all we have to do now is reassemble and test.

Peripheral parts before the lightning strikes!

After reinstalling the turbos, intercoolers and new BMC air filters, we also had to change the flywheel due to excessive play. The coils and spark plugs also had to be replaced to ensure that they were in the best possible condition for the dyno run. However, we're wondering about changing the injectors, because after a while without driving, the car has trouble stalling on start-up. To get the power we want for Stage 3, we'll certainly have to fit M5 F90 injectors.

The figures speak for themselves with the switch to the bench!

Here we go, first run on the dyno to take stock of the situation and make sure that everything's going well from a mechanical point of view. As a reminder, on this first run, the mapping is that of stage 2, so on this shot we're not going to come up with any incredible figures. Verdict before mapping: 710 bhp and 890 Nm of torque, which is promising. We hope to get 880 bhp and 900 Nm (deliberately limited so as not to send the connecting rods to hell).

Development of the M5 on a power bench

After a few runs and adjustments to the mapping on the dyno, we can now say that"it's back". We'll keep you in suspense a little longer before revealing the final power output, but "we can say it's back!

Delivering the M5 to Lucien

Now that everything has been sorted out, all we have to do is return the car to its owner, Lucien Thierry Vigneau Boiserie. He's very excited to get it back and already has in mind the car's next life, transforming it into a 4-seater for drifting baptisms. This is an excellent proposal, as it will give you the opportunity to take advantage of it at future Boiserie Fairs.
