Bosch MG1CS221: the BMW and Land Rover 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 can finally be remapped
The Bosch MG1CS221 DME9 ECU has just been unlocked at Shiftech. This is one of the most eagerly awaited protocols in the luxury segment: this ECU controls the 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine that powers the latest BMW M Power models – the M5 G90, XM and X5 M – as well as the Range Rover SV and the all-new Defender OCTA.
These are vehicles which, until now, had resisted any reprogramming. That’s no longer the case.

The drive systems of the MG1CS221 control unit
The MG1CS221 is the latest generation of Bosch’s DME9 control unit, designed specifically for high-end V8 hybrid and mild-hybrid architectures. It controls two engine families:
The 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 M Competition: the heart of BMW’s most extreme M Power models: the M5 G90, X5 M, X6 M, and the Red Label and standard versions of the XM. These engines deliver between 625 ch and 738 ch as standard.
The 4.4L V8 M60i MHEV: the mild-hybrid variant that powers the 7 Series, the X5/X6/X7 M60i and the Alpina XB7. Between 530 ch and 630 ch as standard, depending on the version.
As for Land Rover, the same 4.4L V8 MHEV engine powers the Range Rover L460, the Range Rover Sport L461 and the Defender OCTA, with configurations delivering up to 635 ch in their most powerful versions.

Unlock
A mandatory Unlock procedure must be carried out before reprogramming
- Mail-in Unlock: your engine control unit is sent to us for an ultra-secure hardware unlock carried out by Autotuner’s engineers. No destructive opening of the housing is required.
- Bench: once back in the workshop, full access is granted. The original mapping is backed up before any work is carried out. The vehicle can be restored to its original settings at any time.
Please note: these vehicle models are fitted with two ECUs. Theunlocking process must therefore be carried out on each of them.
You should therefore allow for two unlocking operations in your reprogramming budget. The cost of an unlock starts at €450 (including VAT) per ECU.
This procedure is carried out only once per control unit.
