Bosch MG1 ECUs could initially be reprogrammed without unlocking. Today, manufacturers are doing their utmost to protect their ECUs: reinforced security and restricted access to data. Depending on the software versions of these ECUs, engine reprogramming may require an unlock and then a full bench read before intervention.
