Dobby's BMW M3 E91: a unique project, now protected by Shiftech thanks to the PPF
Creating a car that doesn't exist is one thing. Preserving it for the long term is quite another. That's exactly what we achieved this weekend with Dobby and his BMW M3 E91, a completely out-of-this-world project that deserves bodywork protection to match its uniqueness.

An M3 E91: when the impossible becomes reality
basically, the BMW M3 never existed as an E91 estate car. Yet this configuration has been entirely recreated: modified bespoke bodywork, integrated M3 elements (front end, wings, chassis, engine, transmission), reworked interior with premium materials such as alcantara...
We are dealing here with a complete M3 technical base, transplanted into an estate body. A radical project, and one perfectly executed by Brothers Custom.

Objective: protect without altering
The problem was simple: how to protect freshly restored original paintwork, while meeting the owner's aesthetic requirements?
Dobby wanted a matt finish, without repainting the car.
The solution: HEXIS body protection film (PPF).
We opted for a transparent matt PPF, capable of visually transforming the finish while retaining the original colour.
The result is a finish similar to BMW's 'Frozen grey' colours, without the constraints of matt paint.
In other words, you protect the bodywork while modifying the finish, without painting and in a totally reversible way.

A tailor-made PPF configuration
The vehicle was fully protected with a combination of HEXIS :
-
PPF transparent matt over the entire bodywork
-
PPF carbon on the roof and air intakes on the bonnet.
This choice goes further than a simple visual effect:
-
Protection against impacts (gravel, micro-scratches)
-
Self-healing film
-
Simplified maintenance, even with a matt finish
-
Possibility of returning to the original finish (total reversibility)
The PPF carbon roof adds an extra dimension: visually stunning, it reproduces the look of carbon without changing the roof.

A week's work for a one-of-one result
This type of project cannot be improvised. Allow around a full week's work:
-
Dismantling components (handles, mirrors, trim, etc.)
-
Precise installation of the film (often pre-cut for an invisible finish)
-
Managing the constraints of complex shapes
The end result is as good as it gets: a uniform finish, with no visual breaks, and a level of detail that makes all the difference on a car that is unique in France.

Moving to the bench: a sound basis
Before its return, the M3 E91 was put through its paces.
The verdict: around 368 bhp and 380 Nm measured in its current configuration (SP98, partial line, modified intake).
A perfectly logical figure given the vehicle's configuration, confirming a sound mechanical base. The potential is clearly there, with room for development (full line, engine optimisation, switch to ethanol).

The verdict: transformation validated
Dobby's feedback was unequivocal: the result was exactly what he was looking for.
-
Matt finish in keeping with the BMW spirit
-
Perfectly integrated carbon details
-
Invisible but effective protection
And above all, a key advantage: the possibility of reverting to a gloss finish at any time.
PPF vs covering: a real difference
The video also highlights a point that is often misunderstood:
-
A covering is only cosmetic
-
PPF really protects the bodywork
Today, new generations of PPF even allow you to combine the two (coloured PPF), opening up even more advanced possibilities than the covering + PPF combo.

Conclusion
This BMW M3 E91 is the perfect example of a successful project: a solid technical base, a clear aesthetic vision, and a body protected over time.
At Shiftech, the aim is always the same: to provide a technical solution that is appropriate, reliable and durable, whether for performance or protection.
